Understanding How Low Testosterone Impacts Mental Health for Law Enforcement Officers

When someone hears the word testosterone, often they associate it with getting ‘jacked’ in the gym or a high sex drive. While testosterone does influence libido and muscle mass, it also plays a large role in many other aspects of health and wellness.

Mental health is often not at the forefront of the conversation about a person’s wellbeing, and this is especially true when it comes to testosterone. It’s important to understand there is a strong relationship between mental health and testosterone. Within your brain, there are cells that have testosterone receptors. When a person has low testosterone levels, these receptors are left without supply and can lead to anxiety, depression, stress, mood swings, irritability, brain fog and much more. This is why it’s important to get hormone levels checked.

Believe it or not, this period of time is typically referred to as ‘male menopause,’ or clinically speaking, andropause. While females experience more drastic changes in their hormone levels during menopause, men often experience a gradual decline in testosterone levels. It’s also important to note that andropause is not linked to a specific age, whereas female menopause occurs often in their 40s. Men can actually experience andropause as early as 30!

When testosterone levels are at an optimal level, men experience more clarity, improved libido, more energy and improved sleep. When levels are low, they experience quite the opposite. This can result in unwanted anxiety and stress, which can impact the quality of sleep. We all know how it feels when we don’t get an adequate amount of sleep. Feelings of irritability tend to take over.

As law enforcement officers, mental health is extremely important. Not only is it important to acknowledge and talk about what happens on the job, but also behind the scenes when it comes to your health and wellness. At Advanced Anti-Aging, we put our patient’s health and wellbeing first. When working with our clinic, we will provide a complimentary phone consultation prior to sending you for thorough bloodwork to check important levels to see what is causing you to feel the way you are feeling. Typically, our patients begin to feel the effects of more balanced testosterone 2-6 weeks after beginning a program.

Our programs are individualized for each person and we are there every step of the way to get you started and on your way back to feeling like you did in your 20s! Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) and Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) are great options for getting back to feeling your best. Our patients choose what feels best for them. Some patients choose injections, whereas others may choose creams. Our programs are tailored JUST for you.
